How to make cold brew at home with a French Press
Overview
Cold Brew is a simple brewing method, that can be refreshing, sweet, and full of flavor. Add coffee & water to your French Press, let it sit for 12 - 16 hours at room temperature, strain it and you are good to go! You may get some fines but you should be able to filter those out with either cheesecloth or by using a paper filter.
What You’ll Need:
150g Coffee
750ml water
8-cup French Press
cheese cloth (or a paper filter)
Kettle
Coffee Grinder
Scale
spoon
Brew Time
12 - 16 Hours
Weigh Out Your Coffee
Start your kettle & weigh out 150g of coffee and grind on a coarse setting making sure that the coffee grounds resemble kosher salt.
Let the coffee bloom
Add your coffee grounds to the French Press & pour 300ml of water a minute off of boil (195°F). Then, gently stir with the back of a spoon to get all of the coffee grounds saturated. Let sit for around 30 seconds.
Add the Rest Of the Water to your French Press
Add the remaining water (at room temperature) to the French Press, stir once more time, and put the lid on. Press down until the plunger is at the top of the waterline ensuring that all of the grounds stay submerged.
Wait for your coffee to brew
This is the hardest part! let the cold brew sit for 12-16 hours at room temperature. The longer you let it brew, the more astringent or bitter the coffee can become.
Filter out the fines
Filtering the fines out of your coffee will leave a smoother mouthfeel for your cold brew. Some people like the texture of the coffee fines, however, we recommend removing them before drinking. This step isn’t a do or die step, but we definitely recommend it so you get a cleaner cup of coffee. Pour your cold brew through a cheesecloth or paper filter to filter out all of the fines. Depending on how consistent your grind size is, depends on how many particles you will have in your cup.
Pour your cold brew concentrate & Enjoy
Pour 1/2 a cup of the concentrate, add the rest with water or milk and enjoy!
This concentrate lasts up to a week in the fridge and can make about 4-5 cups of cold brew.
